Vehicle Spotlight: 2017 Honda CR-V Still on Top

America’s best-selling SUV just gets better with age. And just in time for its 20th anniversary! With an already-winning combination, the 2017 Honda CR-V took a bold leap of faith in engineering. The latest model debuts a new platform and sheet metal, improved visibility and headroom, FWD and AWD options, as well as interior and exterior styling updates that prove the company hasn’t lost its edge when appealing to consumers.

2017 Honda CR-V: Upscale Styling

Right from the start, these changes are hard to miss. Now in its fifth generation, the 2017 Honda CR-V is taller, longer, wider and lighter than previous versions. Honda said the chassis has evolved immensely to provide more agile and confident handling, greater refinement and additional ground clearance. And a MacPherson Strut suspension up front and rear multi-link further enhance the smooth ride.

But Honda credits the vehicle’s extended hood, longer wheelbase, short rear overhang and dual exhaust for giving the CR-V a more upscale look. That longer wheelbase also lends itself to increased space within the interior. Rear-seat riders can stretch their legs a little easier now; plus these latest improvements create additional cargo space, approximately two cubic feet. Additionally, the 2017 Honda CR-V reintroduced the easy-to-use volume knob, which replaces the touch-sensitive slider volume control on its infotainment system.

Turbo Boost

One of the biggest developments is turbo power. The EX, EX-L and Touring trims all come standard with a 1.5L direct-injected, four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces a generous 190 horsepower; while the base LX model is powered by a version of last year’s 2.4L four-cylinder engine with an output of 184 horsepower.

Turbo technology also has helped the 2017 Honda CR-V post improved fuel efficiency numbers in comparison to previous models, now at 28/34 mpg city/highway. And that’s one of the reasons U.S. News and World Report named the CR-V one of 2017’s “Best Cars for Your Money”, taking the top spot in the Compact SUV category.

Safety

Safety comes first, and the 2017 Honda CR-V has made some big strides in this category from generations past. The EX and higher trims all come standard with Honda Sensing to better protect drivers on the road. This safety package includes collision mitigation braking with forward collision warning and pedestrian sensing capability, as well as Road Departure Mitigation with Lane Departure Warning.

Still on Top

Such investments show Honda isn’t afraid to take a step back from its long-standing reign at the top and reevaluate the variables that create future success; the CR-V remains a class leader, and solid model-year upgrades are sure to attract a range of shoppers. Honda continues to give drivers the increased efficiency and comfort they crave at a value that keeps the CR-V earning a top spot in driveways across America.
