Meet the ROXOR SxS: A New and Improved Classic Novelty

If you told us that you don’t like Willys Jeeps, we’d have to insist you’re lying. With durable performance and unmistakable styling, these iconic off-road vehicles took the world by storm in the 1940s. Originally used in battle during WWII, this platform is responsible for kick-starting the Jeep craze we continue to celebrate today. It doesn’t matter if you’re into trucks, hot rods, exotics, or (boring) mid-size crossovers, everyone can find something to appreciate about Willys Jeeps. Unfortunately, today the models are rare and many are in bad shape. But thanks to Indian automaker Mahindra and its new Roxor SxS, you can own your very own Willys Jeep—if only in miniature reproduction.

Step Right Up Here, Don’t Be Shy!

Okay, so technically speaking it’s not a real miniature Willys. But since Jeep has begun legally pursuing the model for infringement of intellectual property, we’d say that adds some credence to its styling being puhretty darn close to the real thing.

Mahindra is no newcomer to the world of utility vehicles. For more than 70 years, the brand has been producing rugged, off-road rides. In fact, Mahindra was licensed to build and import actual Willys Jeeps post-WWII. Additionally, with roots in India, the company is prepared to take on some of the hardest terrain in the world. So, it really comes as no surprise that the new Roxor SxS is stopping enthusiasts in their tracks.

Built to Amaze!

We’ve teased long enough though. Let’s break down this Jeep look-alike that just busted through the front door of everyone’s daydreaming session. Honestly, there’s so much to get excited about that it’s hard to know where to start. It may look like a Willys, but it’s ditched all the factory equipment outside of the shell. With those iconic good looks practically screaming Take me off-road and see what I can do, it’s hard not to find the nearest dealer and force feed them your every last penny.

So, what’s under the hood of one of these bad boys? Well, if you were hoping to find an updated Chrysler power plant, we’re about to send you on an emotional rollercoaster. There’s no straight six, no Pentastar, no HEMI ether. Nope, these babies are diesel-powered. Deep in the bowels of the new Roxor SxS dwells a 2.5-liter turbo diesel that produces 62 horsepower and 144 lb-ft of torque. Behind that is a 5-speed transmission leading to a Dana transfer case and differentials.

Now, the Dana equipment and diesel engine may set the heart fluttering, but the meager 62-hp output will surely return your pulse to a normal range. But, we say, consider this: the original Willys Jeeps were powered by gas engines, producing only 60-hp and 105 lb-ft of torque. They were never really “go-fast” vehicles. They were “go-anywhere” vehicles. The new Roxor SxS may weigh in at just over 3,000 lbs but for all intents and purposes, it has plenty of power.

But Wait, There’s More!

True to form, the interior of the new Roxor SxS is very basic. There is a steering wheel, pedals, a gear lever, seats, a speedo… and that’s about it. Much like the old Willys, these machines are simple and utility-oriented. Although, when you take a peek at the pedal assembly, you’ll find a pleasant little surprise.

That’s right, these bad boys come with a manual gear box. Is it possible for the Roxor to get any cooler? It looks and feels like a vintage Jeep, packs a turbo diesel engine and a super rugged drivetrain, AND it’s a stick. Yep, we’re sold!

Act Now Before It’s Too Late!

The new Roxor SxS is currently on sale all over the U.S. and at a fairly affordable cost. With an MSRP landing between $15,000 and $20,000, it’s within the range of many enthusiasts’ budgets. The catch? It’s off-road only. Despite being larger than most side-by-sides with a 96-inch wheelbase and overall length of 144 inches, it’s still a side-by-side. Meaning, this little brute is only intended for recreational trail use or as a handy workhorse substitute. While that may be a turn off for many, (after all, you may want an off-road vehicle that not only looks like a Jeep, but can also hit speeds over 45 mph) this is still a wicked little ride. The new Roxor SxS—U.S. International Trade Commission complaints aside—is essentially a brand new, compact Willys Jeep. But if you like what you see, you better act quick. FCA is currently pushing to halt the importing, selling, marketing, advertising, and distributing of the ride in America.
