Motul is well-respected within the motorsports community, and it has longtime partnerships with giants like Subaru, Toyota, Nissan, and McLaren. Though common in the automotive industry, the Motul name is also prominent in mining, brick and cement, plastic injection, as well as the mechanical, metal, and even food industries. Let’s explore the company’s fascinating history.

Motul Oil, a Heritage of Winning

Motul’s advancements and innovations in the field of motor oils sparked the synthetic oil revolution that we still enjoy today. In 1966, the Aubervilliers, France-based company introduced Century 2100, the first semi-synthetic motor oil, into the marketplace. Motul raised the bar again five years later with the world’s first fully synthetic, vegetable ester-based motor oil, Century 300V.

These advancements, capable of withstanding the demands of ultra-high-performance engines, led to Motul’s involvement in Formula 1 racing. And so a heritage of winning started with Williams-Motul in 1971 and Team Motul British Racing Motors (BRM) in 1974. Motul also had tie-ups with motorcycle racers. Its oil was in the crankcase of Japanese Grand Prix motorcycle racer Takazumi Katayama when he won the 1977 350cc world championship on a Yamaha. Today, the company partners with manufacturers like Toyota and Lotus, as well as race sanctioning bodies like the World Rally Championship (WRC) and the World Endurance Championship (WEC).

Product Portfolio

Motul Oil is known for offering a wide range of synthetic and traditional gas and diesel engine oils. But it also produces manual and automatic transmission fluid, brake fluid, gear oil, coolant additive, and hydraulic fluid. The focus of these products is meeting the demands of vehicles in both normal and extreme conditions. And as such a mammoth company, Motul communicates those features and benefits in eight different languages via its product label.

Aside from meeting strict industry quality standards (i.e., QS9000 and ISO 9000), Motul is currently working towards more OE manufacturer approvals. It’s well known in European and Japanese vehicle performance markets. But Motul Oil certainly has room to grow in North America. A rich heritage, proven track record, and diverse product offering makes this a staple in every American enthusiast’s garage.
