When Traxxas set out to make the TRX-4 Scale and Trail Crawler, their goal was to obliterate the status quo. They sought to deliver an R/C Land Rover that does it’s namesake justice. Capable. Versatile. Rugged. Powerful. As the video below can attest, they’ve done it. And in doing so, they may just have outdone themselves.  Let’s take a deep dive in the TRX-4, the newest offering from Traxxas.

Land Rover TRX-4: A Portal To Anywhere

The TRX-4 is roughly 1/7th the size of a Land Rover Defender 110.  All 23″ (length) are packed with off-road innovations making this a new breed in R/C vehicles. The most notable of new features are the exclusive Portal axles of the TRX-4.  This new axle design lifts the truck at the wheels. Unlike straight axles, Portal axles can achieve greater clearance with similar tire sizes.  The Portal axle allows the vehicle to look authentically scale, without sacrificing off-road capability.

The TRX-4 is stabilized by a 1.5mm steel ladder frame for exceptional torsional rigidity.  Steel provides a backbone that resists the worst chassis twisting, and lets the suspension system do its job.  And that suspension system? Oil filled coil-over GTS shocks were exclusively created for the TRX-4. Threaded shock bodies allow for easy ride height adjustment.  The silver-anodized aluminum shocks are silky-smooth and look stunning.  I have to keep reminding myself that I am talking about an R/C vehicle here…

Lockers Before Lights

Conventional crawlers sacrifice turning radius for traction, as they utilize axle spools. Traxxas’ T-Lock Remote Locking Differentials allow you lock or unlock the front or rear differentials to suit your driving needs. Want higher speeds and tight handling?  Unlock.  Taking on a technical trail? Lock the front or both for superior pull over extreme terrain. The poser criticism “all lights, no lockers” does not apply here.  T-Lock differentials are standard features on the TRX-4.

However, the inner fenders are equipped with pockets (again, R/C vehicle here) for an optional LED rock light kit. RIGID® light bar and bolt-in headlight kits are available (sold separately)  to light up the trail.  A regulated power supply helps keep the lights consistently bright.

1.9″ Scale Wheels And Tires

1.9″ Wheels provide a bold scale look and come glued to aggressive Canyon Trail tires. Standard 12mm steel hex allows for compatibility with other popular 1.9″ wheel and tire combinations.
